ما لي شغل بالسوق
Māli shoġl bi-sūg
“I have nothing to do at the market”
الهام مدفعي
- مالي شغل بالسوق
Māli shoġl b-is-sūg
ليس لدي أي عمل في السوق
I have no business (being here) at the market.
– māli = ليس لدي
– bi = في

مريت أشوفك
Marrēt ašūfak
مررْتُ لكي أراك
I (just) came by to see you
– marrēt = مررْتُ
Note: Verbs in which the second and final radical are the same are conjugated like final weak verbs.
– ašūfak = أراك
conjugation: šāf – yišūf – šəf(ə)t
Note: In 3āmmiyya ل orلكي after verbs of motion can be dismissed completely, like:
Raḥt al’ab ṭābe. = I went to play football.

عطشان حفن سنين
‘aṭšān ḥafn (ə)snīn
عطشان منذ بضع سنوات
Having been thirsty for years
– ḥafn əsnīn = lit.: “a handful of years”
Note: Since ḥaFN SNīn contains a consonant cluster CCCC a helping vowel (i or ə)is inserted: CCəCC

وأروى على شوفك
wa arwa ‘ala šōfak
وأروى على رؤيتك
Seeing you quenches my thirst

وشلون انام الليل وانت على بالي
wa šlōn anām il-lēl wa anta ‘ala bāli
وكيف انام في الليل وانت على بالي
How am I supposed to sleep at night with you being on my mind?
– šlōn = كيف (š-lōn – what-colour)

حتى السمچ بالماي يبچي على حالي
ḥatta is-simač bi-l-may yibči ‘ala ḥāli
حتى السمك بالماء يبكي على حالي
Even the fish in the water cries over my condition.

حاير وأدور عليك رحت وعفتني
ḥāyir wa adawwir ‘alēk raḥt(i) wa ‘afatni
Lost and looking for you I went (down there) and (/but) you despised me.
– dawwar ‘ala = بحث عن
– raḥt = ذهبتُ
conjugation: rāḥ, raḥ(ə), yirūḥ
- وش سويت أنا وياك يا يلي ما ردتني
wiš sawwēt ana wiyyāk, ya-l-ma riditni
ماذا فعلت انا معك يا من لم يردني
– ridit = اردت
Note: Form IV verbs are very rare in dialects, often they appear as form I, II or III instead. In this case the verb اراد has turned into راد (form I)
What did I do with you, oh you, the one who didn’t want me.
– wiš = ماذا
– sawwa = فعل
– wayyā = مع
– ya-l-ma = ya-illi-ma = يا من لم
– illi = الذي، من

ارد أعبر الجسرين كرخ ورصافة
Ard a3abbir il-jisrēn, karkh(i) wa riṣāfa
اريد أن أعبر الجسرين كرخ ورصافة
I want to cross the two bridges Karkh and Rasafa
– Karkh = Western Part of Baghdad
– Raṣāfa = Eastern Side of Baghdad

واسأل عن المحبوب منهو اللي شافه
w-asa’l ‘an-l-maḥbūb, minhu illi šāfah
واسأل عن المحبوب من هو الذي رآه
And ask about the beloved one, who is the one who has seen him?
– minhu = Iraqi for من
– šāfah= رآه
Note: In Iraqi and Gulf Arabic the masculine object pronoun “-hu” is “-ah”
