Bēn id-dawāli
“Between the grapes”

- بين الدوالي بالكرم العالي
Bēn id-dawāli b-il-karm il-‘āli
Between the grapes in the high orchard.
– دَاليِة، ج دَوَالي = vine
– كَرم / كَرِم = vineyard, orchard
- يا محلا السهرة والبدر يلالي
Ya maḥla is-sahre wi-l-badr yilāli
How beautiful the evening gathering is, the moon is sparkling.
– محلا = Fuṣḥā ما احلى
– بَدِر = full moon
- سحجتنا بتلعب محلا دبكتها
Saḥjitna btil‘ab, maḥla dabkitha
Our ? is playing, how beautiful its dabke is!
– سَحجِة = clapping ?
- شبان بتطرب زادت فرحتها
Shabān biṭṭrab, zādit farḥitna
The young folks are entertaining, our joy is accellerating.
– شبان = plural of شَب / شاب (alongside شباب)
– طَرَب، يِطْرُب = to entertain, sing (“Tarab is used in Arab culture to describe the emotional effect of music, but it is also associated with a traditional form of art-music” (read more here)
- حط ايدي بيدك خليك بجنبي
Ḥuṭ īdi b-īdak khallīk bi-jambi
Put my hand in your hand, stay at my side.
– حَطّ، يْحُطّ = to put, to place
– īd = Fuṣḥā “yadd”
– خَلَّى، يْخَلِّي = to let, to permit
– جنب = Fuṣḥā بجانب (= next to)
- لاسمع قصيدك وافرح قلبي
L’asma‘ gaṣīdak w-afarriḥ galbi
Let me hear your poems, I shall delight my heart.
- صباب القهوة دور بدلتها
Ṣabbab il-gahwe dūr bidallitha
Oh coffee-pourer, go around with the coffee pot!
– صَبّ، يصُبّ = to pour
– دار، يدور = to go around, revolve, spin
– دلة (dalle) = coffee pot
- هالسهرة الحلوة ما منفوتها
ha-s-sahre il-ḥalwe, ma mnfutha
We can’t afford to miss this nice evening gathering.
– هالسهرة = Fuṣḥā هذه السهرة
- جنب العريشة نرقص و نغني
Jamb il-‘arīše nurguṣ u-nghanni
Beside the vineyard we shall dance and sing.
– عَريشة، ج عَرايش = vineyard
- محلاها العيشة و احنا في الجنة
Maḥla ha-l-‘īše w-iḥna fi-l-janne
How beautiful this life is when we’re in paradise.
– احنا = Fuṣḥā نحن
